TRIBULATION AND PLEASURE (2016–2018)

In this series of works, the artist examines the body of an exercising man and the notion of an ideal body. Lying behind the works is the idea promoted by gyms and the media about being goal-oriented, whether in relation to work or physical exercise. What emerges is a hedonistic worldview, in which a person’s own body and mind take centre stage in their lives. Pälviranta also places himself in the works in the series, amid his other subjects. By photographing himself and men spotted at gyms, the artist discusses his own body image and his relationship with the ideal model of a man, as promoted in society.
